Synopsis£ºIn the aftermath of the Sino-Japanese War, anti-Japanese sentiments rise among all classes, political parties, and the masses in China. Depicting Zhang Lan and other democratic nationalists, the film retells the history of the Chongqing Negotiations, the last conversation held between Communist Party leader Mao Zedong, and the Kuomintang(subsequently, ¡°the KMT¡±) leader Chiang Kai-shek. In a gesture of goodwill, the Communist Party gives up the occupied part of the liberated areas. However, unwilling to establish a democratic government, the KMT drives the democratic parties away and gradually moves towards the road of military dictatorship, thus leading to its own demise. During this period, the communists, represented by Mao Zedong, win the support of the entire nation through the establishment of national unity and love for the country, laying a solid framework for the launching of the Chinese People¡¯s Political Consultative Conference. Meanwhile, the KMT vainly plots to use corrupt means such as assassination to impede the Conference. Another battle for the establishment of a new China begins.
